Food Pyramid for Kids
Food pyramid for kids is a tool used as a guide for children for healthy eating. It was developed by the USDA (United States Department for Agriculture) and has had several editions thoughout the years. Introduce your child to this food pyramid, and she’ll learn how to take responsibility for eating a healthy diet.
The latest food pyramid for kids was released in 2005. This new food pyramid designed especially for children 6 to 11 years of age. The aim of this version of the food pyramid was to try to get the message about not only eating more healthily but also exercising everyday through to children and parents. The format of this food pyramid is less detail but still helps to start getting the message about eating healthily and get fun exercises.
Color Coded Food Groups
Food pyramid for kids is divided into 6 color-coded categories, each representing different foods groups that when combined, provide complete nutrition.

• Green is for vegetables
• Red is for fruit
• Blue is for milk
• Purple is for meats and beans
• Yellow is for oils
List below represents the nutrition guidelines for afterschool based on food pyramid for kids.
Grain
Make half your grains whole. Choose whole-grain foods, such as whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, brown rice, and lowfat popcorn, more often. Eat 6 oz. every day (for example, a slice of bread is one ounce)
Milk
Get your calcium-rich foods. To build strong bones serve lowfat and fat-free milk and other milk products. Get three cups every day.
Vegetables
Varry your veggies. Go dark green and orange with your vegetables – eat spinach, broccoli, carrots, and sweet potatoes. Eat 2 1/2 cups every day.
Meats and Beans
Go lean with protein. Eat lean or lowfat meat, chicken, turkey, and fish. Also, change your tune with more dry beans and peas. Add chick peas, nuts, or seeds to salad. Eat 5 ½ oz every day.
Fruits
Focus on fruits. Eat them at meal and snack time too. Choose fresh, frozen, canned, and dried fruits. Eat two cups every day.
Appropriate Exercises for Kids
The picture of a kid climbing up the side of food pyramid represents much needed exercises. Kids should be active every day. A few of favorite exercises include riding a bike, trips to the playground, any sport with ball, swimming, and just being a kid outside.
